“Philadelphia-born Taalib Johnson, aka R&B artist Musiq (Soulchild), grew up the oldest of nine children. The son of a die-hard ’70s soul music fan, Musiq performed at Philly showcases like the Five Spot and Wilhemina’s until his management team, Mama’s Boys (Jerome Hipps and Michael McArthur), brought him to the attention of Def Jam Records. Musiq’s debut album, 2000’s Aijuswanaseing, was recorded mostly at Touch of Jazz Studios in Philadelphia. His first single, “Just Friends (Sunny),” appeared on the soundtrack to Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, and two years later, Musiq released his second album, the spiritual and personal Juslisen, which debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The following year brought the widely acclaimed Soulstar, and after moving to Atlantic, Musiq released Luvanmusiq, (2007), OnMyRadio (2008), and MusiqintheMagiq (2011). Selina Carrera is a prolific, stylistic vocalist, formerly signed to Columbia Records as a recording artist. Carrera’s distinctive sound is a blend of Latin jazz and hip-hop, vocally. A futuristic lyricist too complex to be classified as a rapper, she fits under the title of MC, and is also a spoken-word poet. Like most great vocalists, Carrera began singing in her church choir at the age of eight, and has been professionally trained since the age of ten. Carrera’s main musical influences are samba, salsa, jazz, funk, and hip-hop. A Philadelphia native, Carrera was both a student at the Girard Academic Music Program and a vocal major at the Creative and Performing Arts High School. A gifted scholar, she started writing and performing poetry at the age of thirteen in the tri-state area. After graduating in 2004, Carrera continued her studies at Penn State University, majoring in communications. Finding that West Chester University was a better fit for her, Carrera transferred there after two years at PSU, where she currently majors in creative writing and music. Recently, her hard work has been recognized not only locally, but also around the country. Carrera has been humbled by having the privilege of being managed by Chris Schwartz, co-founder of the renowned independent label, RuffHouse Records. RuffHouse was responsible for fostering such acts as Kriss Kross and The Fugees. Carrera is now hard at work producing her debut album. Growing up in the nineties, a time when music, predominantly hip-hop, was in its prime, Carrera has always been surrounded by artistry of various sorts. She was constantly on the underground scene amongst B-Boys, B-Girls, graffiti artists, musicians—young and old—DJs, and of course sneakers (she is an avid sneaker collector). Along with her musical career, Carrera is a strong believer in the legacy she wants to leave behind as a success story for the youth in her Philadelphia community. She recently created and co-founded an after school program called “The Lyrical Playground,” designed to teach high school students the history of, as well as the various techniques and styles of spoken-word poetry. In the future, Carrera plans to open up three community art centers in her home town. Selina Carrera is blessed beyond words and feels completely satisfied with the way life is taking her. As a real musician she is definitely an artist on the rise and will be truly legendary.
