Warmdaddy’s has always had a special place in my life.

Well more like my tummy.

So when Rashaad aka “Spit” of IAmNotARapperiSpit.com invited me out to Warmdaddy’s Soulful Wednesday’s showcase, I mentally began to pick my menu options for the night.

If you haven’t their food, don’t judge me.

The dimly lit restaurant buzzed with hushed conversations, TV’s channeled to the Olympic games and a Jill Scott performance. We found a place up front and began to hawk the menu in anticipation. The waitress–who was a delight–informed us that the glasses of wine were half off. I started loving Soulful Wednesdays more by the minute. I decided on the Riesling and a seafood spread with potato salad and a Caesar side salad.

Don’t ask why I ordered two types of salad, just know nothing was wasted.

Not long after we began to dig in, a fashionably dressed woman who instantly reminded me of Regina King came to the mic and welcomed us. After informing us that her name was GoGoMorrow and she would be our host for the night, she introduced the first act, Philly SK.

He thanked us for having him and his band, Kopelli, and then went into his set. I wasn’t sure what to expect because he looked like a rapper, not a singer. I came with the expectation of seeing soulful singers. However, the further he progressed into his first song, the more I began to realize why they picked him. He’s got this quiet, powerful, old soul feel to him. In front of us was a lyricist, not a “rapper”.

“How you relate to pain if you ain’t never feel it? I do it all for the glory, I just wanna tell my story,” he spit.

He transitioned into his next song which started with him spitting, “They say they never really miss you ’til you dead or you gone.” SAY WHAT? You quoting my main man Jay-Z though?! My fondness–and that of the audience–for him rose even higher. He then went on to perform “Priceless”, the first single off of his new album with Wes Manchild “No Sympathy”.

I’d like to give kudos to whomever was responsible for putting him in the showcase. Clearly you know your music and you knew he’d be the perfect dash of spice for the night. Check his performance of Priceless below:

Up next was a gentleman whom I had run into before at Charmane Martin‘s album release party: Mel Alston Jr. Mel gives me an Al Green vibe and I LOVE IT. I mean sheesh, he knows his music, he understands music and he respects its power. Between him and the wine–look, I enjoyed my self, okay? When Dakota Black came on to perform two songs with him “Love You Girl” and “Broad St.” the crowd really began to feel him.

He went from singing, “No more arguing, no more fighting, no more cheating, no more lying…I just wanna love you girl” in ‘Love You Girl’ to “Just got off 611 and made a left; cruisin’ by Temple U…Jill Scott is bumpin’ too…I’m tryna get to you,” in ‘Broad St’.

At the close of his set, he was greeted with a round of applause and new fans, I’m sure. Take a listen to the first single “Come Back Down” off his upcoming project “MoVieMUziK” to be released in Fall 2012:

Talk about a tear jerker…ugh..that damn video.

Anywho…

These two gentleman definitely left their mark on Soulful Wednesdays and the Warmdaddy’s crowd. While I expected there to be more acts, in no way was I disappointed with the showcase.

Shout out to Warmdaddy’s for giving soulful food, a soulful environment and damn good soulful music!

Until next time: Let yo SOOOOOOUUUULLLL GLOW!!!!

;-)
