Packers Coach Joe Philbin’s Son Found Dead In River

Sports betting gone terribly wrong…

A body recovered from the Fox River in Oshkosh, Wis., is that of Michael Philbin, Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin‘s son, according to police.

Police said the cause of death has not been determined, pending results of an autopsy in Madison, Wis. Police did not reveal the identity the body until Tuesday morning, pending notification of the family. Foul play is not suspected.

Police had been searching for 21-year-old Michael Philbin, a Ripon College student, since he was reported missing Sunday. He had spent Saturday evening with friends in the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus area, about 50 miles from Green Bay.

Joe Philbin spent Monday in Oshkosh, where Winnebago County authorities pulled his son’s body from the river at 3 p.m. Monday about 30 yards from shore.

Around 2 a.m. Sunday morning, a security guard at AxleTech, a company near the river in Oshkosh, found a man calling for help in the water and called police.

Investigators believe Philbin traveled the 20 miles from his home in Ripon to Oshkosh to visit friends. The group went out on Saturday night in the campus area but somehow Philbin got separated from them.

News of Michael Philbin‘s disappearance made for a difficult Monday in Green Bay, where the Packers are preparing for Sunday’s NFC divisional playoff home game against the New York Giants.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Philbin family during this difficult time,” Packers general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement.

Joe Philbin has been with the Packers since 2003, and has been the team’s offensive coordinator since 2007.Though head coach Mike McCarthy calls the offensive plays, Philbin plays an active role in game-planning. He interviewed for the Miami Dolphins head coaching job last week.

“The Philbin family‘s obviously going through a tough time right now, and as we always have, we’re a family-first philosophy with our organization, with our program,” McCarthy said Monday.

Michael Philbin was the second-oldest of six children to Joe Philbin and his wife, Diane. He was sentenced to six months in jail in 2009 after he was convicted of sexually assaulting two young girls. The criminal complaint alleged Philbin had nonconsensual sex with two females who said they were drunk at his Brown County home.
