Before Halle Berry there was Hattie McDaniel; she was the first African-American woman to win an Oscar (Academy Award) for best supporting actress. She won an Oscar in 1939 for her performance in Gone with the Wind as the role of The Mammy. McDaniel was also a professional singer-songwriter, comedian, stage actress, radio performer, and television star. Hattie McDaniel was in fact the first black woman to sing on the radio in America. Over the course of her career, McDaniel appeared in over three hundred films, although she received screen credits for only about eighty.
