Homer Simpson Named Greatest TV Character
Homer Simpson, beat out a wizard, a vampire slayer, and mob boss to be named the greatest character on television and film in the last 20 years by Entertainment Weekly.
The loveable, mistake-prone, donut-loving dad from the popular cartoon series The Simpson took the #1 spot in the magazine’s survey of the top 100 characters. The magazine released the final list on Monday to mark their 20th anniversary.
Simpson’s creator Matt Groening spoke to the magazine on Homer’s behalf.
“People can relate to Homer because we’re all secretly propelled by desires we can’t admit to,” Groening told Entertainment Weekly.
“Homer is launching himself head-first into every single impulsive thought that occurs to him. His love of whatever… is a joy to witness.”
The rest of the Top 5 included, Harry Potter (2nd), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (3rd), Mob boss Tony Soprano (4th) and the Joker played by the late actor Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (5th).
The bottom half of the Top 10 featured Rachel from Friends, Edward Scissorhands, Hannibal Lecter, Carrie Bradshaw from the popular Sex and the City franchise, and cartoon star Spongebob Squarepants.
