Will @NBCCommunity, Ever Make Its Fourth-Season Debut?

Will @NBCCommunity, Ever Make Its Fourth-Season Debut?

Two daunting questions hang over “Community.” The first is when, if ever, is it going to come back? Its fourth-season premiere was scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Friday until NBC announced that it and second-year sitcom “Whitney” would be postponed so the network can concentrate its October promotional efforts on its new shows.

The second question: Will the sly series retain its sharp edge without creator and executive producer Dan Harmon at the helm? Harmon was fired by Sony Pictures Television, which produces “Community.” The new show runners are Moses Port and David Guarascio, co-creators of the short-lived CW comedy “Aliens in America.”

A new time slot on Friday, a low-viewership night. New show runners. Before the postponement, it already sounded like an old network story: a one-way ticket to cancellation-ville. Now the show is in limbo, waiting for NBC to study how its other programs are faring in the ratings before deciding where “Community” fits.

But whenever “Community” airs, Yvette Nicole Brown is confident that its fans will follow it.

Brown, an East Cleveland native who plays ever-outspoken divorcee Shirley on the series about a band of misfits at a community college, is not ready to break up the study group that has been at the mirthful center of the show since it premiered in September 2009.

She thinks the show will stay funny, she said in an interview before NBC announced the postponement of the season premiere.

Is there separation anxiety over continuing “Community” without Harmon?

“It’s always hard when the person who is the heartbeat of the show isn’t there anymore,” Brown said. “I miss his presence on the show. But we still talk to Dan, so I don’t miss his presence in my life. And with Moses and David, we have show runners who have great love for the show — nice men with great heart. I think we’re still wacky, crazy and weird.”

In addition to sassy Shirley, the Greendale Community College study group includes superslick lawyer Jeff (Joel McHale), beautiful Britta (Gillian Jacobs), glad-handing businessman Pierce (Chevy Chase), high-strung Annie (Alison Brie), former high school star Troy (Donald Glover) and insecure Abed (Danny Pudi).

When and if the fourth season starts, Jeff will be focused on the few remaining credits that will get him to graduation. Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) will be instituting an elaborate physical competition for class space when there is a mixup with registration. And Britta will be helping Abed cope with anxiety over the thought of the study group breaking up.

A University of Akron graduate, Brown, 41, started landing TV roles in 2000. She has appeared in episodes of “Malcolm in the Middle,” “House,” “That ’70s Show,” “7th Heaven,” “Girlfriends,” “Boston Legal,” “The Office,” “Two and a Half Men,” “Chuck,” “Entourage,” “Rules of Engagement” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Her first regular role on a prime-time network series was Eartha Cleveland on “The Big House,” a 2004 ABC comedy that lasted only six episodes. But that year also marked the beginning of her run as Helen on Nickelodeon’s “Drake & Josh” series. Her films include “Dream Girls” (2006), “Hotel for Dogs” (2009), “(500) Days of Summer” (2009), “The Ugly Truth” (2009) and “Repo Man” (2010).

“This has been a fun season of ‘Community’ because Shirley finally gets to work with Troy, which means I get to work more with Donald Glover,” Brown said. “I’ve been pushing for that.”
