Playboy Coming To The iPad Despite Apple’s Porn Policy
A fully uncensored version of Playboy magazine is coming to the Apple iPad in March, Hugh Hefner tweeted Tuesday. But it’s quite not what it sounds.
Though the Playboy founder explicitly said the content will be uncensored, Apple has a well-known tradition of keeping nudity and pornography off of its marquee iProducts. Playboy told CNET that it is launching a new, subscription-based online version of the magazine this spring that will be accessible on devices such as the iPad.
The company said it also will release an official iPad app that does not feature nudity, meeting Apple’s app standards. There’s already a Playboy app for the iPhone that keeps its models fully clothed.
Apple has consistently barred sexual material from the iTunes App Store, where iPhone and iPad users can buy and download applications. CEO Steve Jobs, who recently announced a medical leave of absence, has said “folks who want porn can buy an Android phone.”
Hefner said all back issues of Playboy, in addition to current issues, will be available with the new Web subscription.
