Rapper Kanye West is due to face rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight in a Miami courtroom over a shooting at a nightclub in August 2005.

Mr Knight is seeking more than $1m (£660,000) in damages after he was shot in the leg at a party hosted by Mr West ahead of the MTV Video Music Awards.

The former Death Row Records boss claims the rapper and the Shore Club failed to provide adequate security.

Both Mr West and the club’s owners have denied the claims in court papers.

The party was attended by stars including Black Eyed Peas, Eddie Murphy and Paris Hilton.

No arrests have been made over the shooting.

Mr Knight’s lawyer, Marc Brumer, said his client had paid medical bills of $200,000 (£132,000) after his right femur was shattered.

The amount Mr Knight was seeking also covered a 15-carat diamond earring worth $135,000 (£89,000) lost in the incident, Mr Brumer said.

“He’s an icon in the music industry. He walks in a room and he lights it up,” Mr Brumer said.

“He had an expectation of security there.

“How someone came with a gun into a very VIP party, that just doesn’t meet the smell test in life.”

Mr Knight claims that not enough was done to keep people with weapons out of the club.

US District Judge Patricia Seitz has scheduled the trial to begin on 6 December.

Last month, it was reported on US websites that Mr Knight had missed a preliminary hearing relating to the case.

Mr Knight has a history of legal problems and has spent time in prison for drug offences and breaking parole.

Last year, he pleaded guilty to beating up his girlfriend in a Las Vegas car park.

Death Row Records, which he founded after a failed career as a football player, became a huge success in the early 1990s and was home to rap stars including Dr Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg and Tupac Shakur.

In 2006, a judge ordered trustees to take over Death Row Records after Knight filed for bankruptcy.

The label was later sold at auction.
