The Black Body in Propaganda
Dr. Zuberi also curates “Black Bodies in Propaganda: The Art of the War Poster,” which documents how, in the words of an Atlantic review, “the black bodies portrayed were individuals who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for ideals that had not yet been achieved in the nations for which they fought.”
This exhibit offers 33 posters carefully selected by Dr. Zuberi to explore how the black body has been appropriated to advance causes throughout the world.
The posters on display in this exhibit reveals the ironies in white heroic portrayals of African and African-American men used in mass propaganda over the years.
The exhibit runs at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, on the University of Pennsylvania campus at 33rd and Spruce streets in Philadelphia, through March 2, 2014.
