Mel Gibson: “John Lennon Deserved to be Shot…”

Mel Gibson: “John Lennon Deserved to be Shot…”

Normally you’d call BS immediately on something like this. Except that this was allegedly said by Mel Gibson, whose confirmed quote gallery includes ‘Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,’ among other problematic utterings.

Which brings us to these pronouncements about John Lennon, as alleged by screenwriter Joe Eszterhas.   It was deep into a long and scathing letter from the legendary screenwriter, penned after a collaboration involving The Maccabees dissolved (and the film shelved, at least for now).

“I’m glad he’s dead. He deserved to be shot. He was fucking Messianic!  Listen to his songs. ‘Imagine.’ I hate that fucking song.  I’m glad he’s dead.”

The whole letter – published by The Wrap – is stunningly crazy, and finds Eszterhas accusing Gibson of only initiating the Maccabees film to cover a lingering and deep hatred for Jews.  Yes, a pro-Jewish project created to mask deep anti-Semitic feelings, as basic and crass as that sounds.  Gibson has dismissed it as total fabrication, and a vengeful reaction after Eszterhas’ script was rejected by Warner Bros.

Perhaps that’s for you to decide: a read of the letter seems scarily real, especially the deeper you get enveloped into the insane account.  And Eszterhas has threatened to release iPhone-captured clips of a Gibson tirade.
