Guest Blog: (Short Story) Shards Of The Man I Use To Be -By Eric Blair

Good day mates, this week’s topic is a short story. I am going back to what I know how to do best, story telling. Besides writing a weekly blog, I am also a comic book writer. I have been so focused on my blog I miss the art of story telling. Here it is, a short story I am sharing with you all, titled: “Shards of the Man I use to be.” Enjoy! Peace and until next time.

David Alexander is a thirty something white man, with a slim build and dark hair. Wearing a black suit he sits in his kitchen with one hand on the table and a depleted look on his face. The sun is radiantly shining in from the window behind him. If you listen closely you can hear the angelic humming of the birds outside. In the room where David sits there’s nothing but the cold still deafening air of despair, sorrow, and self-pity. A shadow of what appears to be a woman casts over the chair next to David. David gazes into space with tears dried on his face and watering eyes.

David curls his lips and utters, “I’m sorry.” He looks down on himself as tears start to roll down his face. David says, “Keri, do you hear me? I…I said I’m sorry.” *Sniff* David looks up as he starts gazing off into space with tears rolling down his face, off his chin onto his suit. David says, “I know I’ve deceived you in the past but…but…Hm.” David turns and looks out of the window behind him. He turns back around and gazes off into space again. He smirks as tears roll down his face. “Do you hear that, hun? It’s your favorite bird.” David looks away in shame and says, “I am sorry, I was just trying to make the situation comfortable. I don’t know what to do anymore, Keri.” David turns back around and looks down at the table in front of him as he holds back tears. David says, “I tried my best, I tried my best to be a father, husband, and wonderful lover to you. I don’t know what to do now. I was upfront and honest with you, like always.” David blinks rapidly and says, “I never meant to hurt you or for you to storm out the way you did on Thursday.”

David rubs the back of his head as his bottom lip starts to quiver. *Sniff* “I just don’t know, Keri. I don’t know what to do. I’m lost without you.” David looks down on himself again as he forces tears back. David locks his hands around his neck tightly. “Say something…say something…Honey? Baby? Keri!” David looks up quickly and pounds his fist into the table with tears running down his face. As his voice quivers, “Dammit, Keri, talk to me! Just talk to me! Say one word! I don’t want to be alone! Please, don’t leave me! Please!” With a deranged, depressed look on David’s face he screams, “Say something, please! Keri, please! Please!”

David’s beautiful grey haired mother enters the kitchen and leans over to hug David. David grabs his mother tightly and cries into her shoulder hysterically. His mother rubs his head in a caressing way. David’s Mother says in a calm monotone voice, “Calm down, David, everything will be fine.” David lifts his head up from his mother’s shoulder slowly, and looks into his mother’s eyes with tears raging out of his eyes. David says with a quivering voice, “Tell Keri not go, I need her here with me! Tell her! Tell her!” David’s mother looks in his eyes with a somber, loving look and says, “Sorry baby, I can’t do that. Come on let’s go clean you up and get you back to Keri’s Repast.” The two stand and walk out of the kitchen together; David’s mother rubs David’s back with love and tenderness. As they’re walking out David’s mother says, “I know this might be hard on you, but you need to get yourself ready to speak at Keri’s Memorial Service, she knew you loved her dearly, sweetie.” Both of them exit the kitchen and a robin lands on the sill outside of the kitchen window.

The End.

Wow! That… that… that was awesome! You painted the scene and communicated emotion so vividly. Left me kinda staring at the screen for a few seconds once I finished it to gather myself. Bravo!
