Guest Blog:When Did The Word “Nigger” Become Trendy…Deep Thoughts Via A Flash Blog By Eric Blair

Nigger

  1. A member of any dark-skinned people.
  2. Extremely disparaging and offensive; a Black person, a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible inferior, ignorant, etc.
  3. A victim of prejudice similar to that suffered by Blacks; a person who is economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised.
  4. A derogatory name for a Black person.

Why do so many people use the word nigger?  When did it become cool for other races to use the word, nigger?  Is there an old Jewish White man in Hollywood sending out e-mails to every other race telling them, “Hey, being Black is cool, but if you really want to be down use this cool new word, nigga. Then you’ll be with the in crowd, my nigga.”  Is it that us, Black people, say it so much that other races think: “Fuck it, they know what they are and it sounds cool, so let’s try it out.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I’ve never said the word before, I have sung it along with songs, said it when reading, used the term in writings, etc. I learned the true meaning of the word at a young age and have been against it ever since. I hate when people call me that, or use the word referencing me, because I’m not a nigga, I’m no one’s nigga. It’s not cool nor does it make you look cool by saying it. Why is it that this slanderous term is okay for use by Suburban White kids who think it’s “rad,” and no one thinks anything of it. One of the many meanings for the term nigger is: an ignorant person.  Let’s be real, that’s some bullshit! The word was redefined by some White man writing a new dictionary, who wanted to create an acceptable definition, that gives the word nigger the ability to be used in a politically correct manner. We all know the origin of this word at the end of the day. The word originated as a term used in a neutral context to refer to black people, as a variation of the Spanish/Portuguese noun negro, a descendant of the Latin adjective Niger, meaning the color “black.” The term has since warped in to this hatred phrase to degrade the Black people of many different cultures.  How did this word become trendy? Is it the rappers? Is it the movies? Is due to overuse by us, Black people?  The Nigger has been used to describe us for so long, that now we’re embodying this word as apart of our culture.  This terminology that was used to degrade us, and that we use to degrade one another is now so embraced by our culture that we are degrading our value. Black people are so used to hearing this word that we are numb to its overuse.  Nowadays this term is common in the vocabulary of people of many races, really anyone that can curl their lips and say…”Wassup my Nigga!” We as Black people are ready to fight if we hear some Suburban White kids that think the Black culture is cool because they’re listening to a Tupac CD. The word is ignorant no matter how you wrap it; it’s a crazy world, people. These were the thoughts going through my mind today. I’m not mad or upset; I look at this topic as being very bizarre.  Why use this word when we all know that it’s ignorant, meaningless, and has such a damaging history? It’s a word that came from hatred and fear of another race. It’s not cool to be labeled as a nigger, nigga, or nig.  It’s not cool to greet people as one, it’s not cool to want to be one, and it’s not cool to just accept this word. It’s just fucked up…I’m speechless now…
