Pennsylvania State House Approves ‘Castle Doctrine’ Self-Defense Bill

The state House today gave preliminary approval to so-called “stand your ground” legislation, a self-defense bill that gun advocates have pushed unsuccessfully for six years.

The bill, also known as the “Castle Doctrine” extension bill, would allow someone to use lethal force against an assailant — without retreat — in a person’s yard, porch, car or in a public place. Currently that protection is offered under the law within someone’s home.

The legislation was approved with bipartisan support by a 156-41 margin. There was no debate.

House Minority Leader Sam Smith, R-Punxsutawney, employed a parliamentary maneuver that prevented gun control advocates from offering amendments.

Under the House rules, the chamber must wait 24 hours before considering the bill on final passage
