Guest Blog: When Did We Start Judging Books By Religion…What Happened To The Cover? By Eric Blair

I have a question, it’s more of a rhetorical question but I need to get this out
on paper. “When did we (as human beings) start judging each other by our religious
beliefs?” Since the beginning of time, we have been judging each other by our race,
class, sexuality, views, and now religion. How did we become so ignorant and insensitive
toward each other? These questions in my head could go on and on for days. To see one
religion degrade another or wage wars over “a religion’s cause” hurts my soul. Why do
we hate what we don’t understand?

I heard a story few days ago; my friend, she’s a Muslim. She was on the bus
sitting next to two men; they were bashing the Islam religion over extremist’s behavior.
(Honestly, there are extremists in almost every religion; sorry to bust your bubble.) She
was afraid to speak up or defend her religion because of other people’s reactions. This
same friend worked at the Philadelphia airport where she was a customer service
representative. At work she wore her Muslim garment around her hair, khimar. Her line
would be open all day, and people would rather stand in extremely long lines to wait for
the customer service representative next to her rather then come to her open window.
These are two incident with one religious group; I know there are many more incidents
with many other religions. Why should a person or people be afraid to show pride for
their religion?

Why should he or she be condemned for what religious story they chose to
follow? Religion is an assortment of stories of a God and the bond with his children. It’s
just told in many different languages, in similar ways, but all with the same common goal.
PEACE & LOVE for each other and love for one’s God. These days, religion seems like
it’s a trend to me. Throughout my life women I’ve dated have asked me the
following: “How do you feel about religion” or “what’s your religion?” When I reply, “I
don’t have one; I just believe in God and try to be a beautiful human being,” women
looked at me like I said I worshiped the devil…Ha…Ha…I also had a few women stop
speaking to me because I wasn’t a Christian or didn’t follow any religion. Why does my
religion have to label who I am as a man?

Let’s get down to the source of the problem. People are so quick to fear Islam,
Christianity, Judaism, Millenarianism (Jehovah’s witnesses), etc. because of a few
extremists, stereotypes, what the media depicts, and ignorance of some people. We can
overcome this fear by understanding that religion doesn’t make the person. Religion
isn’t a belief or following to be feared. Religious people are humans like you and I.
They bleed, sleep, and breathe the same. Fear and prejudice can be avoided by asking
questions. Understand that we all are individuals; we have different views, beliefs, and
understandings. If we were all the same how could we change the world? The irony is
people have hatred towards certain religions but the purpose of religion is to love. Funny,
huh? I am not here to argue which religion is better than the other…Nope, that’s not my
battle. I am here to defend human rights and the correct treatment of humans in light
of their beliefs. Would you want someone to condemn you for your views and beliefs?
Would you want someone to hate you for who you are? Religion isn’t something to be
used as a debate topic; it’s a personal understanding between a human and their God. Ask
questions about things you do not understand. It’s much easier to ask questions about a
group’s religious background than hate them for their beliefs. We’re all human the only

thing different we have from one another is race, class, sexuality, views, and religion.

In conclusion, before religion or civilization, we were humans as one tribe trying
to survive together. There might have been war back then, but there wasn’t any mayhem
or disarray over another person’s belief. There is no need to fight or judge something we
have no control over. Life is too short for ignorance to be spread amongst each other, not
only in a religious sense but as human being in general. If a person doesn’t agree with
your beliefs, you have nothing to prove to them because at the end of the day you know
who you are. This judging each other over our religious beliefs is inane. We’re humans;
we all have to live on this big green and blue planet, count on each other to survive and
march into the future. Honestly, if that day so many religions call “judgment day” comes
and there is a day after, whatever religion he, she, you or I worship will not matter. All
that will matter is living in peace and survival.
