NTP Sues Apple, Google And Other Smartphone Makers

NTP Inc, which made it to the headlines after getting a settlement from Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM, RIM.T) over email technology, has said that it had filed lawsuits against various smartphone companies including Apple Inc, Google Inc, Microsoft and Motorola Inc. The NTP recently bagged a USD 600 million settlement deal with RIM in 2006 after an intense legal tussle. The privately held firm is also planning to file lawsuits against HTC Corp and LG Electronics Inc.

According to reports, NTP filed the lawsuits in US District court for Eastern District of Virginia. The firm said that it had no option left but to sue the companies, which were allegedly using its patents without a license. The company says that the companies breached the patents related to the delivery of email “over wireless communications systems.”

There’s been no official response from the companies that have been sued. The Mobile emailing is one of the most important features for wireless companies in modern times. The companies are mooting the smartphones as mini computers, as it offers end-to-end features from Web surfing to games. Apple has made billions of dollars via its iPhone series, while Google has also been making its position in the market through its Android smartphones. HTC, Motorola and LG have been offering Android handsets.

It also ruled that the RIM had breached three claims. NTP said on Friday that it had filed an appeal to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to dismiss the patent office’s remaining rejections of NTP patent claims.
