Mexico ended 2009 with a record number of drug-related deaths, greatly surpassing the then-record tally reached in 2008, unofficial counts indicate.
The government has not released official figures, but national media say 7,600 Mexicans lost their lives in the war on drugs in 2009. Mexican President Felipe Calderon said earlier this year that 6,500 Mexicans died in drug violence in 2008.
Officials say more than 15,000 Mexicans have died since Calderon declared war on the drug cartels shortly after taking office in December 2006. Some observers, such as former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, have likened the situation to a civil war.

Minute organs hidden deep within the ear appear to directly alter blood flow to the brain, scientists have revealed.
Until now, experts thought the inner ear’s job was to control balance alone.
But the Harvard Medical School team, working with Nasa, found the balance organs also affect brain blood flow in their study involving 24 people.
They told BMC Neuroscience journal that the connection probably evolved to enable man to stand upright and still get enough blood up to the brain.
The organs of balance are deep within the ear, inside a maze of bony chambers.

For U.S. Representative Ron Paul, the ninth time may be the charm.
After fighting for decades to increase scrutiny of the Federal Reserve or abolish it, the Texas Republican’s proposal requiring audits of the central bank’s interest-rate decisions is getting traction.
The long-shot 2008 presidential candidate whose anti-tax, anti-government politics struck a chord with a swath of voters is again channeling public frustration with big government, bailouts and rising federal debt. And as Paul trains his sights on his favorite villain, the Fed, many in Congress are listening.

That hit home when chest pains sent him to the hospital after Alabama beat his Florida Gators in the Southeastern Conference championship game on Dec. 5.
And so on Saturday, exactly three weeks later, the 45-year-old Meyer shook all of college football by saying he was stepping down. He resigned after five seasons and two national titles. In so many words, he said he needed to get his priorities straight.
He will coach his final game at the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati on New Year’s Day.

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey has branded a priest who advised needy people to shoplift from large retailers as “misguided and foolish”.
Father Tim Jones, parish priest of St Lawrence and St Hilda in York, said stealing from big chains was often the best option for vulnerable people.
His comments were made in a sermon to his congregation last Sunday.
Writing in the News of the World, Lord Carey said: “Of all people, priests ought to know right from wrong.”
Talking about the desperate situation facing some vulnerable people, Father Jones told his congregation: “My advice, as a Christian priest, is to shoplift.
